   Film-maker
   Originally an associate producer on television series in Hollywood, Peter Medak’s directing career commenced with Negatives (1968) and gathered acclaim with his satire of English aristocratic life, The Ruling Class (1972). His work in the 1980s received a mixed reception; his parody of the Zorro legend, Zorro, the Gay Blade (1981) was overshone by the disappointing The Men’s Club (1986), described by Variety Movie Guide as a dated and distasteful piece of work. However his treatment of real life stories in the 1990s saw a welcome return to form. The Krays (1990), featuring the Kemp twins from the new romantic pop group Spandau Ballet, and Let Him Have It (1991), about the life and execution of Derek Bentley, were both shrewd observations of postwar Britain.
